Are you hooked on your salon blow-dry styling? Do you love that great style you get from the wash and blow dry service? While you may not be able to duplicate the salon perfection of blow dry styling, you can improve your at-home shampoo and blow dry routine. Try these tips from the stylists at Hier and Haines Salon, McLean VA.
How To Blow Dry Hair
Step 1: Detangle Hair. You should do this before you even step foot in the shower for a shampoo. As your water is getting warm, take this time to detangle your hair so that you enter the shower with smooth, tangle-free locks. This will make your post-shampoo/conditioner tangles much more easy to manage.
Step 2: Don’t Brush. While you may cock your head at this step, don’t ignore it. Brushing your wet hair is one of the worst things you could do for it. Your hair is in its most fragile state when it is wet, and running a brush through it will quickly result in broken pieces. It is especially important to remember this during the winter months when our hair tends to be brittle and requires a good winter hair care regimen.
Step 3: Apply a Detangling Spray. (For a point of reference regarding how important this product is…) We recently asked our Salon Owner, Annette Haines, “What are the hair products every girl should have in her bathroom cabinet?” Without missing a beat, Annette replied with two words, “Detangler Spray.” So, don’t skip this step. Spritz the product throughout your damp hair. If you don’t have a spray at home, pick one up at your next appointment.
Step 4: Use a Wide-Tooth Comb. The word to bear in mind is, gentle. Starting at the ends, gently work your way up your head with a wide-tooth comb. The combination of a detangler spray with the comb will help avoid breakage.
Step 5: Apply Heat Protectant. This is an absolute must. A heat protectant spray accomplishes precisely what it advertises: protection. Although, not all products offer the same health benefits to your hair, so be sure that your product of choice is endorsed by your stylist to ensure its legitimacy.
*Note: We always recommend a root lifting spray to add volume to your roots.
Step 6: Blow Dry Scalp. On medium heat, begin blow drying your scalp using your fingertips to zhush your hair.
Step 7: Dry Sections with Paddle Brush. Divide your hair using clips, and begin blow drying sections of your hair using a paddle brush. Use a Concentrator attachment on your blow dryer for direct heat application. Take your time; don’t rush through this process as your paddle brush coupled with the Concentrator attachment will work together to produce frizz-free, controlled hair.
