Are you looking for a way to relax and straighten your kinky or curly, hard-to-manage hair? Do you dream of silky-smooth locks that are manageable and more easily styled? At Hier and Haines we offer BOTH Thermal Reconditioning AND Keratin Protein treatments. Here’s how to decide which is best for you:
You want something that lasts a long time or until your hair grows out…
Thermal Reconditioning (also called Japanese straightening) is a permanent straightener, needing touch-up only once or twice a year. Depending on the degree of straightness desired, and the condition of the hair, Thermal Reconditioning will be done using products by either Liscio or Grund.
Thermal Reconditioning works best with bulky, loose to medium curls. The hair is saturated with a solution containing a chemical that breaks the bonds that give each strand its shape; it is then rinsed, blow-dried, and meticulously flatironed. Once a neutralizer is applied, the hair is locked into this new, straight configuration. The process can take up to eight hours the first time (depending on length and thickness); touch-ups require three to four hours.
All Thermal Reconditioning treatments must be preceded by a consultation to determine that the hair is in healthy enough condition to benefit (and not be stressed) from the procedures.
You want something for a few months or until you decide to change your hairdo…
Keratin Protein treatments are good for 2-4 months. They smooth the surface of the hair but don’t permanently break bonds, so your natural texture gradually returns. Many keratin treatments have been shown to contain varying amounts of formaldehyde (remember chemistry class?) in addition to keratin protein. According to Denise Mann on WebMD, it is important to make sure that your Salon uses only products with safe ingredients and solutions to straighten hair.
Good news: Hier and Haines uses Nano Complex which is completely free of formaldehyde.
After the product is applied, the hair is blow-dried, then flatironed; the solution stays in the hair until you shampoo three to four days later. These Nano Complex treatments can be done on color-treated or damaged hair and are effective on everything from waves to tight curls; they control frizz but maintain some texture and volume. Though you’ll still need to blow-dry hair straight, the process will require less effort.
