Most of us have faced the need to look for a new salon. A move to a new area or the relocation or retirement of your stylist, for example, opens the door to a search for the right salon. It’s a task that can be stressful and time-consuming. You want to get it right!
Every salon is different, with different salon services and stylists who bring unique talents and specialties to their work. Here are some tips for a successful search:
Start With Your Friends
Look at their hairstyles. See something you like? Find out which hair salon and stylist they use. Consider your own personality and the atmosphere that makes you most comfortable. Do you want a quiet experience without much talking or a place where you can gossip a bit and meet new people?
Call for a Consultation
This is a great way to check out customer service. Are the receptionists polite and professional? Is it easy to schedule a consultation? If you ask which stylist would be best for your needs, will they make a recommendation? The consultation is a way for you to check out a salon before you make any commitment.
Visit with Critical Eyes
Your first visit to the salon is the most important. Remember, you are looking for a stylist that will make you look good. Check out the salon décor and the hairstyles other customers are getting. Is it a good match for the look you want? Are the stylists professional, both in their manner and dress? How do the stylists interact with their customers and each other? Is the salon clean? Do you see a team effort in the maintenance and workflow?
Start With a Basic Service
Try a shampoo and blow dry, maybe a trim, for your first appointment. This will give you a chance to see if your stylist is really the best one for you. A professional stylist will talk with you–and listen–to your hair care routines and preferences. Your hair type, hair condition, face shape skin tones, and other physical features will determine your hairstyle options. Is your stylist willing to listen, give advice, act as YOUR “expert partner?” Is the experience enjoyable? Are you satisfied with the results?
Switch if You’re Not Satisfied
If you’re not really happy with the results after a few visits, it’s time to switch. If your stylist doesn’t give you the look you want, it’s OK to look for an alternative.
You Can Help
Bring realistic expectations to your salon appointments. You can help your stylist – bring photos of hairstyles, be clear about what you are looking for. Give the stylist enough time – arrive on time and don’t leave in a rush. If you are not satisfied, tell your stylist and, together, get it right.
