All the attention given to hair straightening and frizz control might give the impression that curls are out. Not true! We see many clients who love their curly hair or who want curly hair. So, whether you were born with curls or have acquired them, here are some tips for managing those non-frizzy waves and curls.
The secret to curly haircuts that work well and look great, is layering. Layers allow movement in your hair and that is what creates the sensation of bounce and…well, fun! Layered haircuts are key for both short and long curly hairstyles.
Another key to a great curly haircut is getting the right texture. By this we mean expert thinning that leaves just enough “weight” on the ends to let the curls take their natural shape. When a poor job of thinning and texturizing is done (focusing on the ends), the result can be the dreaded “triangle head.” We promise not to take you there, and to fix it if you come in that way.
Wash and Dry…Towel Only
On days when you want to wear your hair curly, when you step out of the shower, no comb is necessary. This may sound like a foreign concept if you are used to brushing your hair, but a comb will pull the curl out of the hair, which will interrupt the natural shape and bounce. When you reach for your styling product, apply it to your hair after you have towel dried your hair with a soft towel.
A word about towel drying: thou shall not rub! Gently blot your hair and squeeze out the water. Treat it like fine silk. You may have a habit of rubbing your hair with a towel in attempt to get the water out, but kick this habit to the curb. It can cause breakage and contribute to frizz instead of beautiful, healthy curls.
Styling Curly Hair
A curl activator styling product can come in many forms including cream, gel, and spritzes. Your stylist at Hier and Haines can walk you through the best option for your hair. Apply the product to your hair when it’s damp but not soaking wet.
A diffuser is a curly-haired girl’s best friend. When using a diffuser, don’t touch your hair with your fingers. Let the diffuser do the work. If you touch the curl, it will interrupt the curl and you may end up with frizz – not quite the look you were going for!
